A prominent name in Latin bass music, rapper/producer DJ Laz, The Pimp Wit Da Limp (aka Lazaro Mendez) is deeply rooted and a staple in Miami's music scene and its rich culture and heritage. He started his musical career at age 15, spinning, mixing, and scratching at local clubs in South Florida. At the age of 17 DJ Laz produced his first remix for freestyle artist Nyasia's "Who's Got Your Love" which crossed over in California, then New York charting on BILLBOARD Hot Airplay & Hot 100 in 1991. This led to a historic two-decade career in radio at WHQT FM and WPOW 96.5 FM (1990-2012), where he became one of the station's most popular on-air personalities in Miami.
In 1991 DJ Laz released his debut album, "DJ Laz" featuring "Mami El Negro", the single "Mami El Negro" debuted in the Top 100.
His other albums include 1993's Journey Into Bass, 1996's King of Bass, 1998's Cruzin', 2000's Pimpin', and 2008 "Category 6" releasing his hit single "Move Shake Drop" featuring FloRida, Casely & Pitbull debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number #86, peaking at the #56 spot and spending five weeks on the chart. "Move Shake Drop" also charted on the US Latin Songs and Rhythmic Top 40 charts, reaching numbers 49 and 40 respectively.
Additionally, it charted on the US Pop 100, peaking at number #42 after entering at #97. In the Philippines, it was a major hit, becoming a staple in dance competitions. This started a viral dance trend on all social media platforms as the "MoveShakeDrop" challenge with over 100 millions streams and counting.
"Move Shake Drop" was also featured on the TV shows "Dance Moms," "Easy A," and "Step Up 3D". In addition to his duties as a rapper and DJ, Laz has collaborated and produced music with and for Pitbull, FloRida, Will Smith, Luther Campbell, 2 Live Crew, Gloria Estefan.
Today DJ Laz is touring around the globe with his nephew "Mr. Worldwide" Pitbull as the official DJ for the "Party After Dark" tour which has featured Shaggy and T-Pain. You can also catch DJ Laz hosting "Live from the 305" on Pitbull's Globalization which airs on Sirius XM channel 13.
